Do you have supplementary health insurance in Switzerland? Review it before 30 September

If you have supplementary health insurance in Switzerland (Zusatzversicherung), there's one date you should check: 30 September.

Many people wait until October or November to review their health insurance, when the new basic insurance premiums are announced. But for supplementary insurance, that could be too late.

For many policies that renew on 1 January and require three months' notice, the insurer must receive your cancellation by 30 September.

If you miss your contractual deadline, you could end up paying for another year of insurance that no longer suits your needs.

Not sure when you can cancel your insurance?

You don't have to work through the policy conditions on your own.

Send me your current policy and I'll review it with you.

We'll check:

  • ✓ How much you're paying.

  • ✓ What your policy covers.

  • ✓ Which benefits you can use.

  • ✓ How long your contract lasts.

  • ✓ Your cancellation deadline.

  • ✓ Whether it's worth considering an alternative.

You might be paying for benefits you don't use

It's not simply about finding cheaper insurance.

The real question is:

Are you paying for cover that genuinely suits your needs?

Depending on your policy, supplementary health insurance in Switzerland may include benefits such as:

  • ✓ Glasses and contact lenses.

  • ✓ Gym memberships and preventive healthcare.

  • ✓ Complementary and alternative medicine.

  • ✓ Ambulance and rescue services.

  • ✓ Medical coverage abroad.

  • ✓ Dental treatment.

  • ✓ Semi-private or private hospital accommodation.

The benefits, reimbursement limits and exclusions depend on the insurer and your specific policy.

It's quite common to take out supplementary insurance years ago and continue renewing it automatically without checking what it includes.

Meanwhile, your circumstances change, your needs evolve and premiums may increase.

That's why reviewing your policy isn't about switching insurers for the sake of it. It's about making sure you're paying for benefits that are genuinely valuable to you.

Four things to check before renewing for another year

1. How much you're paying

Look at your monthly premium, but also calculate the total annual cost.

Sometimes a relatively small monthly difference adds up to several hundred Swiss francs over a year.

2. What your policy actually covers

Do you know exactly what's included in your supplementary insurance?

During a review, some people discover benefits they've been paying for over the years without even knowing they were available.

3. Which benefits you use and which you don't

Having more benefits doesn't necessarily mean having better insurance.

What matters is having the right coverage for your circumstances.

If you're paying for services you never use, there may be opportunities to review your policy.

4. Your cancellation deadline

This can make all the difference.

For many supplementary insurance policies with a contract year ending on 31 December, cancellation must reach the insurer by 30 September.

But not every contract follows the same rules.

Your policy may have a different notice period, a longer minimum contract term or other cancellation conditions.

Important: Don't cancel your supplementary insurance before your new policy is accepted

This is probably the most important mistake to avoid.

Basic and supplementary health insurance work differently in Switzerland.

With supplementary insurance, a new insurer can ask you to complete a health questionnaire and decide whether to accept your application.

That's why the safest approach is generally to follow these steps:

  1. Review your current insurance.

  2. Compare alternatives if appropriate.

  3. Apply for the new coverage.

  4. Wait for written confirmation that the new insurer has accepted you.

  5. Only then cancel your existing policy, provided you can still meet its contractual cancellation deadline.

Never assume a new insurer will accept you automatically.

Cancelling your existing supplementary policy too early could mean losing coverage that you may not be able to obtain again under the same conditions.

What if my current insurance is already good?

Then I'll tell you.

My goal isn't to change your insurance simply to arrange another policy.

After reviewing your situation, we may find that:

  • Your premium is reasonable.

  • Your coverage suits your needs.

  • There is no good reason to make changes.

That's a perfectly good outcome.

At least you'll know exactly what you're paying for and why.

And if we identify something worth improving, you'll be able to decide with a clearer understanding of your options.

August and September: Review your supplementary insurance

My recommendation is simple: review each type of health insurance at the right time.

August and September → Supplementary insurance

We review:

  • ✓ Your current policy.

  • ✓ Your coverage.

  • ✓ Your premium.

  • ✓ Your contract duration.

  • ✓ Your cancellation deadline.

  • ✓ Potential alternatives.

October and November → Basic health insurance for 2027

Once the new premiums have been published, we review:

  • ✓ Your health insurer.

  • ✓ Your monthly premium.

  • ✓ Your deductible.

  • ✓ Your insurance model.

  • ✓ Potential savings.

These are two different types of insurance, and you don't have to take them out with the same insurer.

Want to know whether you're paying too much or if your policy still suits you?

Send me your current supplementary health insurance policy on WhatsApp.

I'll review it with you and explain:

  • ✓ What insurance you currently have.

  • ✓ How much you're paying.

  • ✓ Your main benefits and coverage.

  • ✓ Which benefits you could be using.

  • ✓ How long your contract lasts.

  • ✓ When you can cancel it.

  • ✓ Whether comparing other options makes sense.

The initial review is free and comes with no obligation.

And if I find that your current insurance is already suitable, I'll tell you that too.

Don't wait until October to discover you've already missed your cancellation deadline.
