Prämienverbilligung in Switzerland: How to pay less for health insurance without switching insurers
One of the biggest surprises for many people moving to Switzerland is the cost of health insurance.
And it's understandable. Depending on your canton, age and deductible, you could easily pay CHF 300, CHF 400 or even more than CHF 500 per month.
But what many people don't realise is that they might be eligible to pay considerably less.
Switzerland has a financial assistance scheme known as Prämienverbilligung, or health insurance premium reduction.
Every year, many residents receive financial support towards their mandatory health insurance premiums. However, others may miss out simply because they don't know the scheme exists or how to apply.
What is Prämienverbilligung?
Prämienverbilligung is financial assistance provided through the Swiss cantonal system to help eligible residents pay for mandatory basic health insurance (Krankenkasse).
The aim is simple: to reduce the financial burden of health insurance for individuals and families whose premiums represent a significant proportion of their income.
Depending on your canton and financial circumstances, this support can make a considerable difference to your annual expenses.
In some cases, the reduction can amount to several hundred or even thousands of Swiss francs per year.
Who can apply for a health insurance premium reduction?
Eligibility rules vary from canton to canton, but people who may qualify include:
Individuals with low or moderate incomes.
Families with children.
Students.
Employees earning modest salaries.
People living alone.
Eligibility can also depend on your assets, household composition, residence status and other factors defined by your canton.
Some people assume they won't qualify without ever checking.
That's why I always recommend reviewing each situation individually.
How does the health insurance premium reduction work?
If you're eligible, the financial assistance reduces the amount you have to pay towards your mandatory basic health insurance.
The canton determines the amount of support according to its rules and your circumstances.
In practice, the subsidy is generally paid to your health insurer and deducted from your insurance premium.
This means your monthly health insurance bill may be significantly lower.
You don't necessarily need to switch health insurance providers to benefit from this support.
A very common mistake
Every year, some people miss out on financial assistance because:
They don't know it exists.
They assume they aren't eligible.
They find the application process confusing.
They don't know where or how to apply.
As a result, they may continue paying their full health insurance premiums when financial support could be available.
It's worth checking your eligibility rather than making assumptions.
How do you apply for Prämienverbilligung?
The procedure depends on your canton. In some cantons, eligible residents receive support automatically or are contacted by the authorities. In others, an application is required.
Where an application is necessary, the process generally involves:
Checking the eligibility requirements in your canton.
Completing the relevant application form.
Preparing the required supporting documents.
Submitting the application to the responsible cantonal authority.
Waiting for the decision and confirmation of any premium reduction.
Deadlines and required documents vary, so it's important to check the rules that apply where you live.
If your application is approved, the reduction is normally reflected in the premiums charged by your health insurer.
